As an system administrator, I know how difficult it can be to solve Windows Update errors. This is particularly the case with Windows Update, because Windows Update always returns generic errors. KB-articles will likely not help you, because these articles are written with theoretical knowledge, and are barely based on real-world scenarios.

KB968930 fails at installation with Automatic Updates
I recently faced the problem that I could not install KB968930: Update for Windows XP. Installation failed.
This update contains the Windows Management Framework Core.
This installation failure only occured on a desktop computer, which had Windows XP Sp3 workstation and the Exchange 2007 Management Console installed.
Bypass pending reboot of Automatic Updates [0x8DDD0007]
After the installation of several updates with Automatic Updates, a reboot may be required. If this is the case, Automatic Updates will popup a window that asks you to restart your computer.
Also, when you return to the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site, it won’t let you install new updates as long as you don’t have restarted the computer. The following error occurs:

I recently had problems with the Automatic Updates on a Windows 2003 server (the problem described in this article also applies to Windows XP).
I was running WSUS in my domain, but the updates didn’t arrive. A quick investigation resulted in A LOT OF ERRORS in the event viewer. For a couple of days, the following error had returned every one or two minutes or so!

So todaywas another day of strange WSUS errors. Somehow since a few days my eventlog was full of 2 critical errors:
