FIX: The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147942402 (0×80070002)

I recently had problems with the Automatic Updates on a Windows 2003 server (the problem described in this article also applies to Windows XP).

I was running WSUS in my domain, but the updates didn’t arrive. A quick investigation resulted in A LOT OF ERRORS in the event viewer. For a couple of days, the following error had returned every one or two minutes or so!

Event ID 10020: The machine wide Default Launch and Activation security descriptor is invalid

The following error may appear in your Eventlog. The error mostly occurs without notice.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10020
Date:  30-12-2008
Time:  10:05:12
User:  %username%
Computer: %computername%
Description:
The machine wide Default Launch and Activation security descriptor is invalid. It contains Access Control Entries with permissions that are invalid. The requested action was therefore not performed. This security permission can be corrected using the Component Services administrative tool.

Disable Shutdown reason

In all recent server editions of Windows, shutting down or rebooting a server always requires a reason to perform the action. This is an action performed by the Shutdown Event Tracker service.

In a production environment, I can only encourage to keep this annoying screen because it saves you from accidentally rebooting a server. However, in a test environment it can be quite annoying.
