“Remove Snapshot: Operation Timed Out.” in VMWare ESX 3.5

When you (try to) delete a snapshot from a virtual machine in VMWare ESX 3.5, the following error may occur:

“Remove Snapshot: Operation Timed Out.”

This error typically occurs after 15 minutes, and only when your “delta”-file is large. I.e. when you’re making many changes on the server, or when you’re running on the snapshot for some weeks.
However, VMWare is still committing the snapshot in the background. Therefor, just wait and check again after an hour. Take a coffee and a muffin, and much chance that the snapshot is deleted from the Snapshot Manager window :)

Committing all changes to the main VMDK file can take up to 1 or 2 hours or so.

Thanks Chris, I almost died on a heart attack when I saw Timeout operation next to my SQL server (yup production one)… After 1.5 hour all was just like You said… And my 3 delta files (sum of them was like 45GB) just gone :)
