When you try to uninstall Office 2003, the following error may occur
This patch package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.
I faced this error yesterday, after a failed upgrade to Office 2007. My computer hang at the point “uninstalling office 2003“.
Installing Office 2007 was made impossible. Every attempt to install Office 2007, resulted in this error:
“An error occurred during installation.”
Uninstalling Office 2003 first was made impossible too. Every attempt resulted in the error
“This patch package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.”
Working with Word or Excel 2003 was impossible too, because launching the programs resulted in this error:
“The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the Office 2003 product disk and click OK.”
The solution for this problem, is to uninstall Office 2003 with the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. This utility removes all registry files, related to the installation of Office 2003. It’s not quite a nice uninstallation, but it’s better than reinstalling Office 2003 or reinstalling Windows :-)
- Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe
- Install the application msicuu2.exe. The installer will create a shortcut in your start menu)
- Run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility by opening it from your start menu
- Select the Office 2003 installation and click Remove. After removing the installation, you can install Office 2007
